Canada is hosting the fourth negotiation session to develop a global plastics treaty. This international assembly will aim to address pollution at all stages of the plastics life cycle, by working toward a comprehensive solution to one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time - plastic pollution.

To seize this moment, we must encourage the federal government to adopt more decisive measures on plastic pollution right here in Canada.

As we prepare to invite and inspire the world to end plastic pollution, our federal government must undertake the following actions:

  • Expand the ban on unnecessary and harmful single-use plastics to include all takeout cups and lids, over-wrap films, pouches, beverage bottles and caps, and cigarette filters;
  • Eliminate harmful plastics ingredients and polymers, including polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, PFAS, fluorinated polymers, phthalates, bisphenols, brominated flame retardants, chlorinated paraffins and benzotriazole UV stabilizers;
  • Implement measures to require and support refill and reuse systems to replace single-use plastics;
  • End subsidies for petrochemical and plastics production.

This is an urgent and unique opportunity for Canada to exhibit its leadership on combating plastic pollution; an issue that affects everything from our lakes and oceans, to wildlife, to human health.

Tell the Prime Minister and Canada’s Cabinet Ministers to demonstrate ambitious leadership for overcoming our plastic pollution crisis.

Your letter will be sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Steven Guilbeault, Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister Mary Ng, Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister Melanie Joly, Associate Minister Randy Boissonnault, Minister Mark Holland and Minister Diane Lebouthillier
