ONTARIO WANTS TO BUILD NEW GAS PLANTS - THE FEDS NEED TO STEP IN NOW.

Ontario recently announced that it would contract new polluting gas plants to generate electricity. The province's plan will cause emissions from the production of electricity to soar by over 400 per cent by 2030 and by almost 800 per cent by 2040. This increase will cancel out about half of the emissions reductions achieved by phasing out dirty coal and will make it a lot harder for Ontario to meet its own weak emission reductions target.

Ontario is moving in the wrong direction!

We don't need new gas plants to meet Ontario's energy needs. Renewables like wind and solar are now the cheapest form of new electricity generation and are cheaper for the end consumer.

The federal government has promised to deliver 100 per cent clean power across the country by 2035 but there's a loophole in its draft regulations: New gas plants are allowed to be built before 2025 and to continue operating and polluting beyond 2035.

Ontario is using the loophole to quickly push through new gas plants.

Let's urge the federal government to close this loophole and strengthen its Clean Electricity Regulations to prohibit the construction of new gas plants, and require a complete phase-out of polluting gas-generated electricity by 2035.
