ONTARIO NEEDS A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE - NOT MORE FOSSIL FUELS.
While other provinces strive to decarbonize their energy grids, Ontario is increasing the use of "natural" gas - a fossil fuel - to generate electricity, even though there are cleaner and cheaper ways to do that.
Gas plants in Ontario are already some of the region's top polluters, and expanding or building new gas plants will drastically increase greenhouse gas emissions and worsen local air pollution. Rather than phase them out, Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) recently offered new contracts to expand gas generation across Southern Ontario.
This expansion includes the construction of new gas plants in Windsor and St. Clair Township, and increased generation at existing gas plants in Toronto, Brampton, Halton Hills, and Thorold.
And this is just the beginning.
The IESO plans to announce more contracts in the coming months. But, new facilities require municipal council support so if you live in a city or town in Southern Ontario with an existing gas plant, you have the power to organize and stop it from expanding!
