STOP THE EXPANSION OF GAS PLANTS IN ONTARIO - WE NEED A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE.

In the middle of a climate and cost of living crisis across Canada, the Ontario government has decided to contract new polluting gas plants, despite having cleaner and cheaper alternatives available to meet the province's electricity needs.

The province's electricity operator recently announced contracts for two new gas plants in Windsor and St. Clair Township as well as capacity expansions and five-year contract extensions for existing plants in Toronto, Brampton, Halton Hills and Thorold.

But this is just the beginning. The agency is planning to announce additional gas projects in the coming months.

The electricity operator's own numbers show that ramping up gas generation will increase electricity emissions by over 400 per cent by 2023, and by almost 800 per cent by 2040.

This is the complete opposite of what we should be doing, especially considering that Ontario's electricity demand can be easily met with wind and solar energy, combined with storage technologies that allow the power to be used when needed.

Tell Premier Doug Ford and Energy Minister Todd Smith to take our climate crisis seriously, stop expanding gas generation, and build a clean energy grid - now!
