STOP THE EXPANSION OF GAS PLANTS IN ONTARIO - WE NEED A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE.

In the middle of a climate and cost of living crisis across Canada, the Ontario government has decided to contract new polluting gas plants, despite having cleaner and cheaper alternatives available to meet the province’s electricity needs.

Last year, the province's Independent Electricity Service Operator (IESO) announced several new contracts for gas plants as well as capacity expansions in Ontario.

The IESO’s own numbers show that ramping up gas generation will increase electricity emissions by over 400 per cent by 2030, and by almost 800 per cent by 2040.

This is the complete opposite of what we should do. Ontario's electricity demand can be easily met with wind and solar energy, combined with battery storage technologies that allow  for additional power during peak demand.

Ontario must move to a fully clean electricity grid by furthering their investments in renewable energy facilities and strengthening their energy efficiency programs to reduce demand for fossil gas.

Tell Premier Doug Ford and Energy Minister Todd Smith to take our climate crisis seriously, stop expanding gas generation, and build a clean energy grid - now!

Your letter will go to Premier Doug Ford, Energy Minister Todd Smith, Ontario NDP Energy and Climate Critic MPP Peter Tabuns, Ontario Liberal Environment Critic MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon, Ontario Liberal Energy Critic Ted Hsu, and your MPP.
