CANADA: BIG PLASTIC HAS ALREADY LOST IN THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION

The plastic industry pretends that the decision to address plastic pollution through federal law is not backed by science. They insist single-use plastics are not toxic to our health or the environment despite endless evidence that they are. Big Plastic is only concerned about protecting its profits. The success of the plastics and petrochemical industry depends on unrestrained plastic production.

In November 2023, a federal court ruled the Government of Canada acted outside its authority when it listed plastic as ‘toxic’ under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). But the government has announced it is taking Big Plastic back to court to try to reverse the judge’s decision.

This listing was a crucial first step in Canada’s fight against plastic pollution, and we’re proud the federal government is not giving up without a fight. Big Plastic has already lost in the court of public opinion - Canadians want federal action on plastics.

Take action today, by telling the government you support federal action on plastics and efforts to regulate the polluting plastic industry.

Your letter will be sent to: Steven Guilbeault, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and Prime Minister Justin Trudeay. A copy of your letter will be sent to the Big Plastic executives and the Responsible Plastic Use Coalition who are behind the lawsuit against the federal government
