HELP MAKE ONTARIO'S WATERWAYS #LESSSALTY
Every winter, Ontario’s streets, sidewalks, and parking lots are over-salted. The reality is, we don’t need that much salt to keep us safe from slips, falls and accidents. Unfortunately, all that salt puts our environment at risk!
Road salt washes off into storm drains and eventually enters our lakes and rivers. In fact, salt concentrations in some GTA rivers and creeks are as high as sea water. Freshwater species can’t survive in water that salty.
To protect our freshwater, Ontario must be #LessSalty!
Applying too much salt to our public spaces is not only wasteful, but also harms the environment and damages infrastructure. It takes less than a cup of salt to melt ice on a square metre of pavement. When it comes to road salt, less is more.
Take action to protect our waterways. Urge Ontario to be #LessSalty this winter!
