ACT NOW TO HOLD BIG OIL ACCOUNTABLE FOR ITS POLLUTION

For the past two years, people across Canada have been calling on the federal government to make good on its promise to limit and reduce the oil and gas industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. With record-breaking temperatures and growing threats to our health and environment, Canada’s climate ambition depends on a strong oil and gas emissions cap.

In December, during COP28, the federal government released a framework to guide the development of the oil and gas emissions cap. Now there is an opportunity to provide feedback on this process.

This is our chance to make sure the emissions cap is timely, ambitious in its goals, and free of loopholes that oil and gas companies can exploit. Help strengthen this important policy and hold Big Oil accountable for its pollution. To ensure a strong emissions cap, we are calling for the regulation to:

  1. Not be delayed and to be in force by 2025. This means the federal government must release draft regulations by April 1st, 2024, at the latest.
  2. Ramp up the ambition to reduce emissions with a goal that is in line with Canada’s ambition for the whole economy, which is at least a 40-45 % reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
  3. Remove all loopholes allowing the oil and gas industry to bypass their responsibility to reduce pollution. The emissions cap must ensure real emissions reductions are coming from the fossil fuel industry.

Tell the federal government to get it right and draft an emissions cap regulation that limits and reduces oil and gas emissions at a scale needed to fight climate change.
