The redside dace is the only minnow in the entire world that primarily eats insects from the air – including mosquitos!

Some of the last remaining critical habitat for this beautiful fish is in the headwaters of the Humber and Credit Rivers and Carruthers Creek - areas which are directly threatened by Highway 413 and unnecessary sprawl. 

The good news is that the federal government released a recovery strategy for the endangered redside dace in late 2024. Now, it’s time to issue a protection order for its critical habit in Ontario. 

The federal government can and should issue a strong protection order that limits the construction, and especially new paving, in critical habitat areas and the headwaters of the rivers, creeks and streams that the Redside Dace rely upon
