On January 20th, 2025, the Premier Smith government betrayed Albertans by quietly opening the floodgates to coal mining in the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies. 

We know this fight all too well. Over the past five years, Albertans have tirelessly fought over and over against any new coal mining and exploration in this region. The good news is we’ve won, several times. The bad news is, we have to win again. 

Alberta’s Minister of Energy and Minerals took steps to revoke the moratorium on coal mine development and exploration across the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains. This regulation not only protected the Eastern Slopes, but protected Alberta. Now a slew of new coal mining operations are expected to come. 

That's why we need permanent protection against coal mining, along with a way forward to our clean energy future, by demanding the Alberta government: 

• Protect the Eastern Slopes: Grant permanent protection of the Eastern Slopes from mining and industrial activities. 
• Protect Alberta: Reverse the decision to re-open the Eastern Slopes to coal mining, which opens up Alberta to more coal mining operations elsewhere. 
• Alberta’s Energy Transition: Reverse the one-sided restrictions on renewable energy and support a clean energy future.
