Canada’s financial system is putting us all at risk - by heavily investing our money in highly polluting industries in the face of a rising climate emergency. 

Canadians deserve the security of a strong economy and safe climate. Yet our financial institutions, like our banks and insurance companies, are jeopardizing this by recklessly spending Canadian’s wealth on fossil fuel projects. While driving short-term profits for the few, they’re accelerating the climate emergency for the many. 

Each year, Canada’s top five banks finance over $100 billion dollars to fossil fuel companies, totalling almost $1 trillion dollars since 2016. Pension funds and insurance companies hold billions of dollars in fossil fuel assets and investments. But we can change this. Tell our political leaders to support a plan for climate-aligned financial regulations, by: 

• Ensuring that our financial system meets our climate targets of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees
• Enforcing climate transition plans for financial institutions to credibly reach their net-zero targets
• Keeping greenwashing out of our finances and investments by ensuring that oil and gas doesn’t get labelled as sustainable.
