CARNEY: Time for Big Finance to Act on Climate!

Canada's financial system is putting our climate and economy at risk by investing $100 billion of our money every year into pollution industries despite the growing climate crisis.

Canadians deserve the security of a strong economy and a safe climate. To do that, we need our financial system to be on the side of climate action!

Yet our financial institutions - like our banks and insurance companies - are underinvesting in the clean energy economy that could support all of us, like wind and solar energy, which can benefit communities and Indigenous nations. The majority of Canadians want our banks and pension funds to support clean energy and long-term good, but we need government intervention to drive this change.

Canada needs $115 billion annually to fund its transition to a clean, safe energy system.

However, every year, Canada’s top banks provide over $100 billion to fossil fuel companies instead, while pensions and insurance companies hold vast oil and gas assets. But we can change this.
By shifting investments towards the energy transition, Canada can become a clean economy leader. This can be achieved if the government:

  • Introduces a federal framework for a climate-aligned financial system that meets our climate targets of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees
  • Requires climate transition plans from financial institutions to reach their net-zero targets credibly
  • Brings global credibility to our finances and investments by ensuring that investments in oil and gas do not get labeled as sustainable

Add your voice to urge Prime Minister Carney to align Canada's wealth with a climate-safe economy!

Your message will be sent to your Member of Parliament, Prime Minister Mark Carney; Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, Hon. Pierre Poilievre; Co-Leader of the Green Party, Elizabeth May; Interim Leader of the NDP, Don Davies; and Leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet.
