SAVE ONTARIO'S LAST REMAINING WETLANDS!
Wetlands keep the water in our lakes and rivers clean, provide homes for rare Ontario birds, fish and turtles and help prevent flooding in urban areas by absorbing excessive rainfall.
Unfortunately, Southern Ontario has already lost over 72 per cent of its original wetlands!
We have laws in place to protect our wetlands, but the provincial government has tweaked Ontario’s Wetland Evaluation System so that very few wetlands will qualify for protection if they are re-evaluated – and real estate speculators are eager to get properties re-evaluated.
Sign-on to our call to protect Ontario's wetlands by asking the Minister of the Environment to:
- Reverse recent changes to the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System
- Ensure 100 meter buffers around wetlands and 150 meter buffers around provincially-significant wetlands
- Develop a plan for wetland protection and restoration that will increase the total amount of wetland area in Ontario
Join the call to restore and strengthen wetland protections!
