Toronto: Let's get moving on public transit improvements!
Are you tired of traffic and slow, unreliable travel times? The City of Toronto has plans to make bus and streetcar service faster and more reliable by implementing priority transit lanes.
This is a big opportunity to make our streets work better for everyone. Priority bus and streetcar lanes reduce traffic congestion, make roads safer, and help drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike move more smoothly through the city. By prioritizing transit, we can make getting around more affordable, sustainable, safer, and more efficient through convenient, lower-cost travel options that help reduce air pollution and reliance on cars.
Many City Councillors have shown commitment to support priority transit lanes. It's time to ask them to keep their promise!
How do the lanes work? Priority lanes marked with red paint and signage would keep buses moving even when traffic is heavy. These lanes are reserved for buses during busy times of day, helping thousands of riders get to work, school, and appointments more quickly and comfortably. They can be used by TTC and Wheel-Trans buses, emergency vehicles, school buses, and cyclists as well. A priority streetcar lane is also proposed for the centre lane of Bathurst between Bloor Street and Lake Shore Boulevard West (except for one block near Toronto Western Hospital). Priority transit lanes on Bathurst Street and Dufferin Street will improve travel for up to 75,000 people who take buses and streetcars on these routes everyday, which is more than those who travel by car. Yet, more priority transit lanes will reduce congestion and make travel faster and more reliable for everyone - car drivers included.
Show your support for priority bus and streetcar lanes as a win for reliable transit, cost of living, and the environment!
