LAKE ERIE NEEDS US: CALL FOR FRESHWATER PROTECTIONS
For more than a decade, Lake Erie has suffered from annual toxic algal blooms. They are less severe this year, which is great news for the lake! These blooms wreak havoc on Lake Erie, robbing the water of oxygen and harming humans, animals and the environment.
This spring, the lake received less of the polluted runoff that is largely responsible for the blooms. However, a wetter spring next year could mean more runoff, washing away all of the lake's improvement.
This uncertainty is compounded by the fact that U.S. President Trump has threatened to tear up agreements and gut agencies designed to monitor and protect the Great Lakes.
It’s more critical than ever that Canada, Ontario, and the Great Lakes states work together to protect shared waters. Sign on to urge the federal and provincial governments to safeguard Lake Erie and sustain all fresh waters. Ask them to:
- Work with farmers to reduce excess fertilizer and manure run-off
- Invest in tools designed to monitor the real-time health of the Great Lakes
- Honour both domestic and bi-national agreements, like the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement
The Great Lakes are beloved for a reason—they supply fresh drinking water, feed into larger freshwater networks, provide beautiful vistas for recreation and sustain life itself. Together, we can call for meaningful action that ensures Lake Erie—and all fresh waters—are healthy for future generations.
