Help create a better future

Stand Up for Affordable Electric Cars in Canada!

In December 2023, Canada made a big move forward for clean transportation that would help make more affordable electric vehicles available to Canadians. Right now, this progress is under threat!

The federal government’s Electric Vehicle Availability Standard is a regulation that holds car companies responsible for their pollution by requiring them to shift sales towards electric vehicles. Together, in 2023, we helped achieve this important win for the environment. Now this policy is on pause for review. And auto industry lobbyists are pushing hard to weaken it so that car companies can keep making profits from selling gas-powered cars.

This regulation would phase out the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035 and require automakers to sell more zero-emission vehicles each year. It could cut 135 million tonnes of pollution, lower EV prices by 20% for the average consumer, and drive more investment in charging infrastructure. But the auto industry is putting profits before people and the planet. They want weaker targets, longer delays, and bigger loopholes. If they succeed, Canadians will be left with fewer choices, longer wait times, and EVs that remain expensive and out of reach—while gas-guzzling cars, trucks, and SUVs continue to flood the market. Now is our chance to tell the federal government to stand firm and strengthen this regulation, not weaken it.
