DEMAND A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE FOR TORONTO
The group of Toronto’s major electricity agencies have released a draft version of Toronto’s energy plan - the Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP). The plan has come up extremely short of what Toronto really needs to meet electricity demand for the next 20 years.
The plan does not have a clear and transparent pathway to phase out the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) gas plant and will also rely on generating nuclear energy which is both expensive and extremely time consuming to build. If Toronto continues in this direction, it will not only worsen the climate crisis and our health, but will waste billions of taxpayer dollars.
We’re calling on Toronto’s City Council to step in and reject this plan to protect the future and well-being of their constituents.
In order for Toronto to reduce local emissions and lower electricity bills for residents, this plan must prioritize reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and ramping up renewable energy, battery storage, and energy conservation.
City Council must demand that Toronto’s energy plan includes:
- A pathway for retiring the Portland Energy Centre by 2035
- Commitments to meeting the TransformTO targets of net-zero by 2040
- Development of rooftop solar which has potential to replace PEC’s output and meet up to 25% of projected energy demand
- Investments in Battery Storage and energy efficiency measures
Take action now to demand a clean energy future for Toronto!
Your message will be sent to the Toronto City Council and Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow.
