Help create a better future

WATER IS NOT FOR SALE. IT'S A PUBLIC RIGHT.

Buried within the provincial government's Bill 60, the newly adopted Water and Wastewater Public Corporations Act paves the way for water privatization in Ontario—a dangerous move.

“Public corporations” are not the same as publicly owned corporations. As written, the act does nothing to ensure that private, for-profit corporations aren’t put in charge of public water systems, like drinking water and sewage services.

Entrusting local water management to private, for-profit corporations threatens to erode transparency and accountability, and can lead to higher water bills, contaminated drinking water and polluted waterways.

History also reveals a track record of failure for water privatization efforts. Since the 2000s, hundreds of attempts to privatize water management worldwide have failed, including in Hamilton, ON, where it led to disastrous environmental and financial consequences.

Water security—including safe, clean drinking water—is far too precious to gamble with. Sign on now to urge the provincial government to amend the Water and Wastewater Public Corporations Act before it's too late.

Your letter will be sent to Premier Doug Ford and The Honourable Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, cc your MPP.
