TELL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: RESTORE TRANSIT FUNDING

Ever feel like you're waiting longer and longer for a bus or a train that may or may not show up? It's not just bad luck,  it's the result of a transit system that's been chronically underfunded…and it just got hit again.

The federal government recently cut $5 billion from public transit funding - that’s money that could help you get to class, to work, to family and friends — on time and without breaking the bank.

Here's what happened: money that had been earmarked to keep fares affordable and buses and trains running on schedule  was folded into a general infrastructure fund. That means transit now has to compete with other priorities. Instead of guaranteed money for buses and trains, transit is just one option in a bigger pot — leaving less on the table for urgent repairs and service improvements you actually need.

Here’s what makes it even worse: even when federal transit funding does exist, it can't be used to run more buses and trains or lower fares. It's locked into building new infrastructure. Meanwhile, the services you rely on every day just keep getting worse. If we want more people to choose transit over driving, we need affordable buses and trains that actually show up on time and run frequently.

Cutting transit doesn't just inconvenience people — it pushes more cars onto roads, spikes emissions, and makes cities harder to live in for everyone who isn't already wealthy enough to drive everywhere.  Public transit is one of the fastest ways to reduce pollution while connecting people to jobs, schools, and housing.

Your letter will be sent to your local Member of Parliament, Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the Honourable Steven macKinnon, Minister of Transport
