Public space is important to Torontonians. It's why we've invested billions in re-making the waterfront as a place for residents and families to gather and spend their time. In the winter we skate. In the summer we attend festivals and sample delicious food. Waterfront activities attract 17 million visits per year.
An expanded Island Airport with jets will ruin all of this.
Turning the Toronto Island Airport into a jet airport requires hundreds of meters of new runway built in the harbour and the lake. It would increase air and noise pollution, cancel 14,000 new homes, and turn the harbour into a polluted stagnant mess. It means Lake Ontario and the Toronto Harbour will be filled with concrete. It means destroying our ability to swim, boat, sunbathe, cycle and walk along the waterfront. And it means canceling affordable housing that Toronto so desperately needs.
We can’t let this happen.
The good news is that whether this disastrous project goes ahead is completely up to the federal government and your local Member of Parliament (MP). Sign now and tell your MP that this is the wrong plan for our waterfront, Toronto Islands and Lake Ontario!
