Tell Mayoral and Councillor Candidates to Salvage Hamilton’s Anti-Sprawl and Housing Progress
This letter will be sent to incumbent members and certified Mayoral and Councillor Candidates running in the Municipal Election in Hamilton.
After years of pro-sprawl planning and restrictive residential zoning that caused a shortage of affordable family-sized homes, Hamilton City Council has spent the last few years initiating the kinds of changes that will, if they continue, turn things around.
Your vote in this October’s municipal election will determine whether or not the City of Hamilton will move faster on its new pro-housing, pro-affordability, pro-environment path, or if it will surrender to sprawl before it’s reaped the rewards.
We can build more homes to end Ontario’s housing shortage. But only if we change where and what kinds of homes (think fourplexes and midrise) inside existing residential neighbourhoods. That’s the key to building more homes faster and for lower costs. It’s also better for our health and environment – it reduces car dependency, protects farmland, and strengthens local food security. It creates walkable, connected communities with easy access to services, while saving taxpayers money by using existing infrastructure.
