Wisconsin is bending over backwards to get Foxconn – a multinational technology manufacturing company – to set up shop in their backyard. But first, Racine, Wisconsin needs the state’s approval to divert 7 million gallons of Great Lakes water daily from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River watershed.
Unlike other diversion requests, Racine doesn’t want the water for drinking. They want it for commercial use in a neighbouring community – the Village of Mount Pleasant. Racine’s diversion could set a dangerous precedent that would allow other communities to divert Great Lakes water for industrial and commercial purposes.
Despite being signatories to the Great Lakes-St.Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement, Ontario doesn’t automatically get to weigh-in on this important diversion request. Help us urge the province to get involved.
