Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Pepsi: take back your trash. Support a deposit return program in Ontario now!

In Ontario, big beverage companies like Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Pepsi sell about 3 billion plastic bottles every year.

Less than half of those bottles get recycled. That’s over 1.5 billion bottles that end up in landfills or in our environment, including the Great Lakes, where they kill fish and wildlife, threaten ecosystems, and even make their way into our food and drinking water.

Deposit return programs can successfully reduce plastics going to landfills and to the environment. B.C, Alberta and Saskatchewan collect over 80% of plastic bottles with their deposit systems. It’s time for Ontario to get with the (deposit return) program. But big bottlers are getting in the way. They refuse to back this kind of system, despite it being only way to significantly increase our recycling rate.

Every four minutes, approximately 12,000 plastic bottles are thrown away in Ontario. We don’t have time to waste.

Tell Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Pepsi to step up and support a deposit return program for plastic bottles in Ontario.
