TELL MINISTER PHILLIPS TO PROTECT THE CARRUTHERS CREEK HEADWATERS
Developers want to pave over the Carruthers Creek Headwaters, a sensitive ecological area and prime farmland in Durham Region.
Pickering City Council just voted in favour of asking the province of Ontario for a special exemption to bypass the normal planning process, which will shut out public consultation and fast track the area for development.
We need to call upon Finance Minister Phillips, Ajax MPP, to protect the Carruthers Creek headwaters. During the election campaign, Minister Phillips promised to do just that. Now’s the time for him to keep his word.
Paving over this area would not only mean the loss of this sensitive natural area and prime agricultural lands, but it may also contribute to flood risk, and require the Town of Ajax to raise taxes to pay for upgrades to the city’s stormwater management system.
A recent report by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority found that urbanization will have a negative effect on the Carruthers Creek watershed and will lead to a dramatic increase in downstream flooding and erosion.
During the election, over Twitter Minister Phillips said “Protecting Carruthers Creek continues to be a priority for me and I will advocate for its protection as MPP for the @TownOfAjax…”
Now is the time to undertake that advocacy.
Tell Minister Phillips to stop developers from paving over the Carruthers Creek Headwaters. Help save this ecologically sensitive area.
