Canada should reduce harmful air pollution by supporting the shift to cleaner vehicles
Air pollution created by vehicle travel is harmful to both human health and the climate. Conventional cars, trucks, and other combustion vehicles that are used every day emit air pollution and contribute to illness, premature deaths, and greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change. In the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), pollution from traffic leads to almost 900 premature deaths every year.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Modelling shows how shifting to electric vehicles and cleaner, newer trucks could save hundreds of lives every year by improving air quality, cut almost 70 per cent of the GTHA’s greenhouse gas emissions from traffic, and lead to billions of dollars in social benefits.
What’s more - improving air quality also helps address the unequal impacts of traffic-related air pollution, which disproportionately harms communities who live close to major roads and highways who are more likely to be lower-income or face other health inequities.
Submitting this petition will trigger an email directly to your federal MP and other influential Ministers, asking them to address the problem of air quality and improve public health in the GTHA and beyond by supporting the shift to cleaner vehicles.
Your letter will be sent to: Hon. Marc Garneau, Federal Transportation Minister, Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Federal Environment & Climate Change Minister , Hon. Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Patty Hajdu, Federal Minister of Health & Your Local MP
