DEVELOPERS WANT TO PAVE OVER THE DUFFINS CREEK WETLANDS - TO BUILD WAREHOUSES
Developers are trying to pave over an area of sensitive and important wetland between Pickering and Ajax in order to build a massive new warehouse complex. We urgently need your help to stop it.
Lower Duffins Creek Wetland complex is one of the GTA’s largest remaining wetlands on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Developing this land violates provincial law and policy, is destructive to the environment and will increase local flood risks, all for the sake of making more money for developers. The Town of Ajax and the Toronto Region Conservation Authority are opposed to this development but they need your help.
The Province has already granted developers a Minister’s Zoning Order - MZO - which will let them ignore the rules around protecting wetlands and bypass any public consultation – meaning they do not want to ask your opinion about this damaging development.
The Ontario government passed Schedule 6 of Bill 229 on December 8th to try to force the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to negotiate a “pay to slay” agreement with the developer that would allow the developer to pay cash for the permit to destroy the wetland. Money from such agreements are how the provincial government plans to fund its cynical Wetland Conservation Partner Program launched on Dec. 7th
Lower Duffins Creek wetlands need to be protected, not bulldozed for a cash payment.
We and our partners Ontario Nature and Ecojustice have filed a judicial review application to challenge this illegal MZO but we need your help.
Take action today to tell local MPPs Bethlenfalvy and Phillips to stop their attacks on this wetland and support the Toronto Region Conservation Authority in their efforts to protect this critical area.
