Canada: Use the 2021 budget to invest in a Green and Just recovery!
It’s time for the federal government to uphold its promise of a greener, healthier, more equitable future.
Environmental Defence is joining environmental groups across Canada for One Earth One Voice – a campaign to rally our supporters to urge the federal government to prioritize a Green and Just Recovery. Decision-makers in Ottawa are currently determining how to allocate billions of our tax dollars, with a new federal budget just around the corner.
To shape the Canada that we want to see, we are asking the federal government to make a series of critical investment decisions that will:
- End fossil fuels subsidies and shift spending to a Green and Just Recovery,
- Deliver strong climate legislation, ambitious climate targets, and policies that enable climate justice,
- Protect 25% of land and ocean by 2025 and support Indigenous-led conservation, and
- Expand and leverage nature-based climate solutions.
A Green and Just Recovery for Canada means, above all, investing in a society that places people’s health and the well-being of the natural ecosystems that sustain all species, including us, above corporate profits. That means more funding behind climate action, social justice and environmental protection. The upcoming budget may be our best chance to make these ambitions a reality.
