CANADA: IT'S TIME TO MOVE FORWARD WITH ACTION ON PLASTIC POLLUTION
On May 12, the federal government listed plastic as “toxic” under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). This listing is a crucial first step in Canada’s fight against plastic pollution. It allows the federal government to better manage the production, use and disposal of plastic.
But now members of the plastics and petrochemical industry, like Dow, Imperial Oil, and NOVA Chemicals, are suing the federal government in an attempt to stop Canada from tackling the plastic pollution crisis.
It's time for all major party leaders to work together to move action on plastic pollution forward. That means:
- vigorously defending the lawsuit that threatens the listing of plastic as toxic under CEPA
- implementing bans on single-use plastics right away
- supporting reuse in order to shift away from single-use products and packaging
- avoiding false solutions, including subsidies to the petrochemical industry for dirty and unproven "advanced" recycling schemes
Take action today! Send a letter to all the major party leaders letting them know you expect them to support ambitious action on plastic pollution.
