CANADA, DON’T WAIT UNTIL 2030 TO BAN THE EXPORT OF THERMAL COAL

Across Canada, over 30,000 people have come together to demand that the federal government commit to banning the export of thermal coal. As one of the most harmful fossil fuels, thermal coal wreaks havoc on the environment, the climate and human health - and is responsible for more than 800,000 premature deaths a year due to air pollution impacts.

The federal government recently answered the public’s outrage by committing to ban the export of thermal coal by the year 2030, but that’s too far off. Thermal coal is a huge contributor to climate change, and if Canada waits until the end of the decade to impose an export ban we will miss a critical opportunity to reduce emissions and keep warming below 1.5 C.

There is no excuse to continue exporting thermal coal until 2030. We have the technology to replace it with cheaper, healthier, and cleaner renewable energy.

Canada must do its part to help the world move past thermal coal. If we don’t, we share the blame for the impacts to come, including extreme weather events, forest fires, and other devastating effects on communities and human health - many of which are already harming people here at home.

Our house is on fire, and we won’t wait until 2030 to put it out. Join us in asking the government to take immediate steps to ban thermal coal exports through Canadian ports by 2023.
