CANADA: DON’T GIVE PUBLIC MONEY TO BIG POLLUTERS

Oil and gas companies have profited immensely for decades from activities that are fueling the climate crisis, and polluting our land and water. These rich companies are using their influence to extract tax breaks and handouts from the Canadian government.

Fossil fuel subsidies make it less expensive for industry to pollute, and leave less money for public goods like education, health care, and clean drinking water.

In some cases, the federal government is flat out subsidizing destructive projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and the Coastal Gaslink pipeline. These projects violate the rights of Indigenous Peoples, risk toxic spills, and threaten endangered species habitat.

Because of pressure from Canadians, the federal government has made promises to eliminate subsidies by the end of 2023. But these promises just don’t go far enough. Yet at the same time, the government has also created massive new subsidies for unproven and ineffective carbon capture technologies like Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS).

There’s no two ways about it: the Canadian government has to stand up to the oil and gas industry and end fossil fuel subsidies.

Any pay-out to industry qualifies as a subsidy. Take action today and tell the federal government to stop using our public dollars to finance pollution, environmental destruction, and injustice.
